Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is gray and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?
----The Moody Blues
Ah, The Moody Blues, one of my all time favorites.  I got "turned on" to their music in the late 1970s, and finally saw the group a number of times beginning in 1990.  What amazes me is with all of the music I have heard over the years, and at my disposal, I still find I continue to play their songs, never tiring of them.  In my book, that says the group truly created something very special, something that may well pass onto future generations.

The Moody Blues played to an enthusiastic crowd at a sold out
Wolf Trap, Vienna, Virginia performance, Saturday July 2, 2005.

Moody Blues Fans from Philadelphia, North Carolina, New York, and parts unknown, gathered at a pre-show get together at Cafe Carnavale and after show one at The Silver Diner, to trade war stories and other chit-chat.  Here are a few photos.  Concert photos will be added as available.

Thanks go out to Crispy (and others) for pulling together the pre-show fan gathering.

Moody Blues Shirts

1990 World Tour T-Shirt purchased outside Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland, July 28, 1990.  This may have been a bootleg shirt, but the graphics are fantastic.

This was my first Moody Blues concert, and thinking back, perhaps the concert I most enjoyed.  The Moody's were renewing touring, and both they and the fans were really into the show.  Patrick Moraz was with them and did an excellent job on the Mellotron (or a Mellotron substitute), as they did not use a backup orchestra for this concert.

Mellotron

Did you ever wonder how the Moody Blues came up with such interesting sounds on their early 'core seven' albums?  Well, much of this is due to a very complicated recording tape driven instrument called a Mellotron.  Former Moody, Mike Pinder helped refine Mellotron development, as well as make use of the unwieldy instrument.  Check out Mike's Mellotron history by clicking here.
Also, for additional history and pictures, see the Mellotron archives site of David Kean, who even today is actively involved with them!
Breathe deep the gathering gloom,
Watch lights fade from every room.
Bedsitter people look back and lament,
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
